History and economy

Even though Slovakia is a young country, established only on 1 January 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, it has a very long and diverse history.

More

Language

Through language we learn about its speakers, about their perception of the world, their country and culture, customs or possibly even bad habits. Thus the Slovak language can also work as a shortcut to Slovaks. So what is Slovak like?

More

Natural sights

Over 40 percent of Slovakia is covered by woodland, giving the country one of the largest forest areas in Europe. In Slovakia you can find hills, mountains, and parks, as well as bodies of water such as lakes or rivers which forge their way through rocks to create unique landscapes that you will love. Embark on a journey across Slovakia and discover its natural wonders.

Regions

Despite its small size, Slovakia is an incredibly diverse country. Nature, people and especially its historical development have gradually brought about a division of the territory into regions. The best known regions include Liptov, Spiš and Orava. However, unique untouched nature together with remarkable traditions, culinary specialities and culture can be also found in the Gemer or Horehronie regions. Today, Slovakia is divided into eight administrative regions:

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic on the adoption of the 2016 Enlargement Package
The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic welcomes the adoption of the European Commission’s 2016 Enlargement Package, which contains assessment reports concerning the individual candidate countries and potential candidates for EU membership. We recognise the fact that this year’s package is centred around an assessment of the implementation of last year’s strategy, while also taking stock of trends in the region in key areas such as the rule of law, fundamental rights, migration, the functioning of public authorities, economy and regional cooperation. The reporting methodology introduced last year was expanded to cover additional areas. This has facilitated a better assessment of the overall progress made over the past year, as well as mutual comparisons between the individual applicants.
