Slovakia and the eu

What Slovakia brings to the EU

The Slovak Republic participates in the functioning of the European Union and is represented in each of the European institutions.

In the European Commission, which proposes EU legislation, Slovakia is represented by Maroš Šefčovič (photo) who holds the important position of the Vice-President for Energy Union.

In the European Parliament, which – along with the Council of the EU – adopts EU legislation and establishes the EU budget, Slovakia is represented by thirteen directly elected MEPs.

Advisory bodies

Slovakia has also ten representatives in the European Economic and Social Committee. This advisory body – representing employers, employees and other interest groups – is consulted on proposed laws, in order to get a better idea of possible changes to employment and social situations in the Member States.

Slovakia currently has nine members in the Committee of the Regions, the assembly of regional and local representatives. This advisory body is regularly consulted on proposed laws, in order to ensure that these laws take account of perspectives from each region of the EU.

Slovakia also communicates with the EU institutions through its permanent representation in Brussels. As Slovakia's 'embassy to the EU', its main task is to ensure that the country's interests and policies are pursued as effectively as possible in the EU.

Slovakia and the EU budget

Member States' financial contributions to the EU budget are shared fairly, according to their means. The larger the country's economy, the more it pays. The EU budget does not aim to redistribute wealth, but rather to focus on the needs of all Europeans as a whole.

Total EU spending in Slovakia  – EUR 1.669 billion (2014)

Total EU spending as % of Slovak gross national income (GNI)  – 2.26 % (2014)

Total Slovak contribution to the EU budget – EUR 0.625 billion (2014)

Slovak contribution to the EU budget as % of its GNI – 0.85 % (2014)

The money paid into the EU budget by Slovakia helps fund programmes and projects in all EU countries – for example building roads, subsidising science and research, or protecting the environment.

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic on the adoption of the 2016 Enlargement Package
The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic welcomes the adoption of the European Commission’s 2016 Enlargement Package, which contains assessment reports concerning the individual candidate countries and potential candidates for EU membership. We recognise the fact that this year’s package is centred around an assessment of the implementation of last year’s strategy, while also taking stock of trends in the region in key areas such as the rule of law, fundamental rights, migration, the functioning of public authorities, economy and regional cooperation. The reporting methodology introduced last year was expanded to cover additional areas. This has facilitated a better assessment of the overall progress made over the past year, as well as mutual comparisons between the individual applicants.
